BCLogoGavin Andresen bitcoin lead developer, Bitcoin Foundatation member and person behind the closed Bitcoin Faucst has made a post on BitcoinTalk saying "I decided a good use of Bitcoin Faucet funds would be compensating miners who had blocks that were orphaned in last week's Bit Chain Fork."

This is a very generous move by Gavin, under the normal rules of bitcoin if you generate a block that is orphaned for any reason the bitcoin reward (currently 25 BTC) is in the orphaned block and never makes its way into the block chain.

There were 31 blocks orphaned in the May Fork totalling for a total of 775 BTC in rewards that were orphaned.  Pay per share pools like BTC Guild who pay even if blocks were orphaned took quite a hit in the fork and will be very happy, and grateful for Gavin's generosity.

Gavin later goes on to stress that "This is a one-time thing-- don't expect orphaned blocks in the future to be compensated!" so dont expect your orphaned blocks to be paied in the future.

Gavin's full post on BitcoinTalk is below.

After talking with a few groups of people, I decided a good use of Bitcoin Faucet funds would be compensating miners who had blocks that were orphaned in last week's Bit Chain Fork.

This is a one-time thing-- don't expect orphaned blocks in the future to be compensated! It is just a coincidence that I haven't had time to fix the Faucet, and have a bunch of coins waiting to be given away.
